Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Universal childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Challenges of Governing

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
