Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
