The Evolution of a Movement is often characterized by clear stages.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or leaders introduce an innovative concept that promises a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to confront the system in Australia. The gunships are circling. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. A lone figure, naked, anxious, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET displayed prominently as a statement, has come staggering from the field and is being led away in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Do you ever miss the start, when everything was fresh? The initial phase, of pure instinct.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders guarantee a fresh beginning, a brighter tomorrow, love, success together with shared faith in the philosophy.

What was this thing at first? Players celebrating enjoying success. Ink. Strength. Determination. Elite male wellness energy. Of course, England’s players will claim it’s not a real term, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player playing a shot so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the thrill of Ben Stokes at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, strong features, untamed style, genuinely raw you half-expect to look down and notice he’s fielding in the field bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s Ben Duckett often seen to talk in press conferences, appearing as a cheerful animal formally attired, expressing thoughts like we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was only good energy.

3. The Growth Phase

Building period. Unity enforced via memorization of mantras. These beliefs can appear contradictory as a loyalty check.

Am I alone? The backlash, the outrage, the disappointment following the initial loss feels overblown, unwarranted. The batting collapsed on the field, as history shows. They were dominated while bowling in a short span as plans unraveled, carved around by Travis Head playing aggressively but smarter, adaptive to conditions, a man playing with brilliance.

Currently, we see the pile-on, the anger, the sense of English Test cricket as a kind of abomination. The feeling seems to be that defeat must be total, they must be humbled, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed by the vengeful purity of Mitchell Starc’s movements, the low-fi orthodoxies of Scott Boland, seen enjoying achievements with a bashful smile like he’s just been given a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Problems arise because of mistakes. However, faults are ignored. It starts to feed on hostility externally.

In truth, approaching from the second Test, we are at a delicious point of tension in the lifespan of this thing. They might succeed in Brisbane through aggressive play. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. Should they fail it seems we could be witnessing the decline.

Prior to that, there are two things to consider about this. More than two years ago, at the start, of light and heat, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. There was outrage, which was helpful because everyone knows the best way of proving something definitely isn’t a cult is when its acolytes respond with anger rejecting criticism of the philosophy.

The developments recently is just as interesting. Criticism of the approach has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset travelling fans disappointed by the short match, reminiscent of people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation with the aggressive tourists, stating, hey, that thing you love and have honed as part of your identity from the opposition, it’s not serious in the end old boy.

And this is the real point. It’s all cults. The style was a trend as the game has its own culture. Or rather, English cricket has always been a cult, a circle, a private event, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it. This has always been where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of the nation, the original sports washers. And guess what, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been isolated in this system since childhood. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are simply replicating their own experience, forming a new circle, a closed circle, but now with 15 cool guys and a mentor who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.

With this mind, it might be appropriate to have some sympathy for the movement, to recognize its positives, that are numerous. What does it represent? Promoting liberation. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
