RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
