Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
